Iranian blog protest: an update

Time for an update regarding the situation in Iran, where, as we posted here last week, bloggers have been in engaged in a bold anti-censorship campaign.

The dangers of exercising free speech in such a regime were highlighted when the Iranian authorities jailed three journalists.

Reporters without Borders, which campaigns for international press freedom, has welcomed the release of one of the men, Babak Ghafori Azar (whose weblog is here). But it said the other two men were still in custody and urged bloggers and urged other internet users to send email messages of support to internet.persan@rsf.org

Azar was detained for two weeks for allegedly writing for the news website Rouydad.

Blogger Shahram Rafihzadeh, the editor of the culture section of the newspaper Etemad, and Hanif Mazroi, a journalist who used to work for several reformist newspapers, were "probably being held in connection with the blocking of the Rouydad news site since 21 August on the orders of the Tehran prosecutor's office," according to RWB.

Messages will be forwarded to the families of the imprisoned journalists and posted on the Farsi-language section of the Reporters Without Borders website.
