Iran Warns of Regional Fallout after Strikes on Syria

Iran's Foreign ministry on Saturday condemned the US-led attacks on Syria and said Washington and its allies would bear responsibility for the consequences in the region and beyond.

"The United States and its allies have no proof and, without even waiting for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to take a position, have carried out this military attack," said the foreign ministry.

The United States, Britain and France carried out a wave of punitive strikes against the Syrian regime in response to alleged chemical weapons attacks in the rebel-held Damascus suburb of Douma last Saturday.

They “will assume the responsibility for the regional and trans-regional consequences of this adventurism," the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement carried by state media.

"Iran is opposed to the use of chemical weapons on the basis of religious, legal and ethical standards, while at the same time it ... strongly condemns (using this) as an excuse to commit aggression against a sovereign state," it said.

"This aggression is designed to compensate for the defeat of the terrorists" in Eastern Ghouta, an area recently recaptured by regime forces, the ministry added.

Iran has been Bashar al-Assad's most supportive ally in the Syrian war. It provides him with military advisers and "volunteer" ground forces.

US President Donald Trump warned Russia and Iran on Friday about their association with Assad, as he announced the launch of the retaliatory strikes.

In a primetime address from the White House, Trump said: "To Iran and to Russia, I ask: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?"
