Iran says it has seized a foreign tanker on suspicion of smuggling oil

Iranian officials have seized an unidentified foreign tanker for oil smuggling, according to state TV.

The tanker was carrying 12 crew, but the name and nationality of ship has yet to be confirmed, reports Plymouth Live.

It comes just weeks after Iran promised retaliation for Britain's seizure of its tanker Grace 1.

Royal Marines seized the tanker off the coast of Gibraltar after it suspected it was smuggling oil into Syria, despite an international ban.

At the time, Iran threatened retaliation for the seizure and called it an "form of piracy."

Mohsen Rezaei - a member of a council that advises the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei said Iran would respond to bullies "without hesitation".

He added in a tweet: "If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the authorities' duty to seize a British oil tanker."

Although the name and nationality of the ship has not been announced, it comes at a time of heightened tension between Iran and the West.

Two UK warships have been deployed to the Strait of Hormuz to protect tankers in the region off the coast of Iran.

The USA has deployed ships and is sending 500 soldiers to its base in Saudi Arabia.

The report says the tanker was smuggling fuel from Iranian smugglers to foreign customers and was intercepted south of Iran's Larak Island in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Also, an oil tanker based in the United Arab Emirates travelling through the Strait of Hormuz drifted off into Iranian waters and stopped transmitting its location over two days ago.

US officials have expressed suspicion that the Panamanian-flagged oil tanker Riah had been seized in Iranian territorial waters.
