Militias loyal to Iran have continued to recruit new members in Syria, especially in the country’s south and regions west of the Euphrates River.
New recruits are enticed to join in return for financial gain. The militias also play on religious and sectarian sensitivities to attract new members.
The militias have continued their “Shiitization” of people in the city of Mayadeen and its suburbs, the Alboukamal region, Deir Ezzor countryside, the area north of Daraa and the city of al-Baath in the Quneitra countryside that is close to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
The militias are taking advantage of the Russian forces’ preoccupation with developments on the northern border with Turkey to intensify their spread of Shiism in the South.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that more than 7,400 recruits have joined Iranian and pro-Iran militias in southern Syria. Some 5,900 Syrians have also joined their ranks.
