The Geneva showdown with Iran is looming on Thursday, and there is no sign of give anyone's position. Vice President Ali Akbar Salehi, who is the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, made a series of press appearances today to argue there was nothing wrong with the Qom enrichment plant which came to light last week.
It was built where it was, dug into the side of a mountain next to a revolutionary guard missile site, to save money, Salehi said.
"This site is at the base of a mountain and was selected on purpose in a place that would be protected against aerial attack. That's why the site was chosen adjacent to a military site," he told reporters. "It was intended to safeguard our nuclear facilities and reduce the cost of an active defence system. If we had chosen another site, we would have had to set up another aerial defence system."
