Iran issues ultimatum to US over Strait of Hormuz

  • Iran 's top security official, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, has declared that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the US fulfils six specific demands.
  • They include the US ending all military interventions in the region, withdrawing its forces, compensating Iran for past conflicts, lifting sanctions, and releasing frozen assets.
  • The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesperson said that the strait is now considered a “tool of power and war”.
  • Since February, Iran has controlled traffic in the international waterway, causing oil prices to rise and prompting concerns about potential fees for passing vessels.
  • A proposed deal between Iran and Oman could grant Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf via the strait, a move the US has previously opposed.
