Iranian judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said on Tuesday that Tehran initiated talks with Baghdad to follow up on the killing of major general Qasem Soleimani of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The Iranian official said a delegation, including representatives from the judiciary, the intelligence ministry, and the IRGC and its Quds Force, has held a meeting with Iraqi judicial officials for cooperation on prosecuting those behind Soleimani’s killing.

“Iraq welcomed the follow-up,” he said.

On Jan. 3, a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport targeted and killed Soleimani.

“The judiciary has filed a special case with Tehran’s prosecutor to indict those who have ordered, carried out and collaborated in this inhuman act,” Esmaili said in a televised press conference in Tehran.

Washington has blamed Soleimani for masterminding attacks by Iran-aligned militias on US forces in the region.

Last month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington’s move to kill Soleimani was an “important strategic strike.”

Following Soleimani’s killing, the Revolutionary Guards aerospace division commander said four US military bases in the region were used to deploy aircraft and drones involved in the Jan. 3 attack.
