Iran funeral disaster: More than 50 die after being crushed in stampede

More than 50 people have died and hundreds more injured after a stampede at the funeral of Iran general Qassem Soleimani.

Mourners were gathered in the south-eastern city of Kermanon on Tuesday morning when the deadly crush occured.

Reports say that a total of 56 people - 35 men and 21 women - have been killed.

A further 213 are reported to be injured.

General Soleimani was killed in a US air strike last week.

An earlier procession in Tehran on Monday drew over a million people in the Iranian capital, where the death has sparked calls for revenge against the US.

Prime minister Boris Johnson has spoken with the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the need to ease tensions in the Middle East.

Following their phone conversation, Number 10 said: "They agreed on the importance of reducing tensions and finding a diplomatic way through the current crisis, and of continuing to work together in the fight against terror.
