A former employee of Iran's defence ministry has been executed on charges of spying for the US, according to reports.

Iran's IRIB news agency reported the man, who worked on contract for the aerospace organisation of the defence ministry, was executed at Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj, west of Tehran.

Jalal Hajizavar, who left his post nine years ago, was convicted by a military court after an investigation.

This discovered documents and spying equipment at his home, the report said.

The charges were on spying for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

There have not been further details on the when the execution took place.

The news comes amid growing tensions between Iran and the United States.

President Donald Trump said on Saturday he will impose additional sanctions against Iran in an effort to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

He added that military action was still a possibility.

Mr Trump, who was speaking to reporters at the White House, made his comments after recently calling off military action against Iran to retaliate for the downing of a US military drone.

"We are putting additional sanctions on Iran," President Trump said. "In some cases we are going slowly, but in other cases we are moving rapidly."

The US President spoke to reporters as he prepared to depart Washington for the presidential retreat Camp David, where he said he would be deliberating on Iran.

Britain is sending its Middle East minister to Iran to call for urgent de-escalation in the region due to the growing tensions between Tehran and Washington rise.

Iran said on Saturday it would respond firmly to any US threats, according to reports from the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

In regards to sanctions, the US President said the measures would come into force on Monday though he wanted to make a deal to bolster Iran's economy.

This comes after the shooting down of an unmanned US drone this week by the Islamic Republic.

On Thursday, an Iranian missile destroyed a US Global Hawk surveillance drone and President Trump later said he had called off a military strike to retaliate because it could have killed 150 people.

Washington said the incident happened in international airspace but Tehran repeated on Saturday the drone was shot down over its territory and it would respond firmly to any US threat.

Speaking in Washington on Saturday, before heading to the US presidential retreat at Camp David, President Trump indicated the government was taking a diplomatic path to put pressure on Tehran.

However, military action was "always on the table", he said.

Though he added that he was open to quickly reaching a deal with Iran that he said would bolster the country's flagging economy.

"We will call it 'Let's make Iran great again,'" Mr Trump said.

He later wrote on Twitter from Camp David: "We are putting major additional Sanctions on Iran on Monday. I look forward to the day that Sanctions come off Iran, and they become a productive and prosperous nation again."
