Exiting the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers is one of Iran's options, the Iranian president's chief of staff, Mahmoud Vaezi, said on Wednesday.
"It was discussed that it's possible some may take Iran's file to the (UN) Security Council ... If this happens we will take tougher decisions such as leaving the nuclear deal," said Vaezi, according to the official IRNA news agency.
He added that President Hassan Rouhani had previously raised the possibility in a letter to the European powers.
Last week, Britain, France and Germany launched a complaint against Tehran for non-compliance with the nuclear deal.
The European states initiated a so-called dispute mechanism process, saying Iran had progressively scaled back its commitments under the agreement.
The accord, which makes it significantly more difficult for Iran to develop nuclear weapons undetected, was struck in Vienna by Iran, the three European nations, the United States, China and Russia.
The agreement allows a party to claim significant non-compliance by another party before a joint commission.
If the issue is not resolved by the commission, it then goes to an advisory board and eventually to the Security Council, which could reimpose sanctions that were lifted under the accord.
The US quit the agreement in 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Iran.
