
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi signaled on Tuesday there was no longer any point in Tehran honoring the 2015 nuclear deal without reciprocation, according to Fars news agency.
“With attention to the promises that have not been carried out from the European side, there is no reason left for Iran to carry out its commitments unilaterally,” Araqchi said.
“Iran has kept the window of diplomacy open by reducing its commitments (only) incrementally.”
A top security official said Iran would "resolutely" abandon more commitments under the nuclear deal on July 7.
"As of July 7, Iran will forcefully take the second step of reducing its commitments" to the nuclear deal, Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, was quoted as saying by Fars news agency.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian warned Iran on Tuesday that violating the accord would be a serious mistake and that France, Britain and Germany were making it clear to Tehran that it was not in its interest to do so.
President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday as part of a French initiative to prevent an escalation of tensions in the Middle East, Macron's office said in a statement.
An Elysee official declined to give further details on the conversation.
The United States has imposed crippling financial sanctions against Iran since last year when President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear pact between Tehran and world powers under which it curbed its nuclear program and won a removal of sanctions in return.
The crisis has escalated sharply since last month when the Trump administration tightened its sanctions noose, ordering all countries to halt purchases of Iranian oil.
Tehran has given European signatories until July 8 to find a way to shield its economy from US sanctions, or else it will enrich uranium to higher levels banned under the deal to help ensure no development of a nuclear weapon results.
Washington says forcing Iran to the table is the purpose of its sanctions. Tehran has said it is willing to talk if the United States lifts the new sanctions first.
