Ipswich Town strike record-breaking deal, Celtic and Rangers knocked back – League One transfers

The new EFL season is just five days away and Bristol Rovers and their League One rivals are working hard to get deals over the line.

The Gas have made four signings this summer and Joey Barton has indicated they are perhaps not even 50 per cent done in the market this summer, indicating he wants as many as seven new additions by the time the deadline closes on September 1.

Therefore, a busy few weeks could await the Gas, and their counterparts in the third tier are making moves in the market, too. Here is a roundup of the latest transfer talk from across League One.

Rovers target heads to League Two

Earlier in the window, the Gas and Stockport County were credited with an interest in signing Wigan Athletic defender Luke Robinson on loan earlier in the summer by Football Insider.

Joey Barton had previously indicated that was an area of the pitch he was considering strengthening, and the same publication had said Rovers were interested in Robinson in January.

However, the 20-year-old Birkenhead-born defender has headed to League Two for the season, joining hometown club Tranmere Rovers.

"He’ll complement the style of play we are trying to implement this season," manager Micky Mellon said. “Squad depth is massively important with the number of games we play, Luke can play both full-back and centre-back so to be able to have Luke gives us the resources we need within the squad.”

Ipswich agree seven-figure fee with Leeds United

After several weeks spent negotiating with Leeds United, Ipswich Town have agreed a fee in excess of £1million for defender Leif Davis.

The Tractor Boys have been chasing the 22-year-old all summer after he spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, and manager Kieran McKenna appears to have got his man.

The East Anglian Daily Times reports a deal has been struck that will make Davis the most expensive defender bought by a third-tier club.

Sheffield Wednesday want Rangers star

Sheffield Wednesday are rivalling Derby County for the signature of Rangers star Kemar Roofe.

The forward has an impressive record at Ibrox, scoring 34 goals in 72 games, and he helped Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side reach the final of the Europa League last season.

Despite that, the 29-year-old Jamaica international is seemingly available this summer, with several clubs reportedly eyeing a move for the former Oxford United and Leeds United playmaker.

Alan Nixon reports the Owls are among several English clubs interested in signing Roofe, with manager Darren Moore seeing him as the "missing link" in his team.

Exeter turn down offers from Rangers and Celtic

Exeter City's production line of youngsters continues to create highly-rated prospects and the Grecians have turned down offers from Celtic and Rangers this summer for teenager Alfie Pond.

The 18-year-old centre-back played twice for Matt Taylor's side last season before joining Tiverton Town on loan, and he is tipped to be a star of the future at St James Park.

That has led to interest from several clubs and according to Devon Live, offers from the two giants of Scottish football have been rejected.

“We have turned down a couple of really low offers from clubs north of the border in relation to his contract and that is not resolving itself anytime soon," Taylor said. "We have a fantastic loan opportunity on the table but the player and agent are turning that down at the moment."

Trio eye West Brom talent

West Bromwich Albion prospect Ethan Ingram has interest from League One clubs, according to Football Insider.

The 19-year-old made his debut for the Baggies last season, playing against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, and League One sides MK Dons and Cheltenham Town, plus League Two club Crewe Alexandra, are keen to sign him on loan this summer.

Ingram was impressive for West Brom's under-23s side last season, scoring six goals in 24 games in Premier League 2, suggesting he could be a dynamic threat in League One this season should a deal be sealed with the Baggies.
