Ipswich Town owners make 'call to action' ahead of Sunderland visit

Ipswich Town are hoping to sell out Portman Road for the visit of Sunderland in December.

That is because the full group of the club’s new investors will be in attendance when the Black Cats travel to East Anglia.

The match will take place exactly a week before Christmas Day and the owners of the Tractor Boys are targeting a bumper crowd.

Their CEO, Mark Ashton, sent out a message to the supporters to ensure there is a raucous atmosphere for the clash with Sunderland.

"All of our American-based investors are going to be here and at the game,” he said. “That’s the first occasion that we’ve got the whole board and investment group together.

"We want to go for 28,000-plus. We want to be brave and bold. We want to show the world that Ipswich Town Football Club is back on the map.

"The fans have been incredible but let’s go a bit further. Let’s get behind the boys and fill this place.

"We need to build attendances. We want to create an electric and amazing atmosphere. It’s a call to action to the supporters - let’s pack out Portman Road."

The attendance at Portman Road has averaged less than 20,000 so far this season so an expectation of over 28,000 is quite the request from the owners.

Although, they can rely on the travelling fans making up a decent percentage of the crowd.

As they so often are, the visiting players will no doubt be backed by a packed away end despite the round trip for the away fans being well in excess of 500 miles.

Despite the fall from the Premier League into League One, the Mackems continue to travel around the country in serious numbers to watch their team.

They will be hoping that their unwavering support is rewarded with three points in their final league match before Christmas.
