Ipswich Town line up defender, Norwich City consider goalkeeper - Championship rumours

It's likely to be a busy summer at Ashton Gate as Nigel Pearson launches a full-scale rebuild of Bristol City after releasing 11 players on Friday in a serious cull of his squad.

Pearson wants to revamp the club top to bottom and has maintained there will be activity in the market over the coming months but that also the Robins will have to be "creative" in how they operate.

The Championship season, of course, isn't over yet with the play-offs beginning this week, and the likelihood is that the destinies of most players won't be decided towards the end of the month when options become clearer.

But the clubs that get their business done early, in what's likely to be a challenging market, are those who will likely formulate the best-looking squads by the time the season comes around in August.

With transfer talk accelerating as clubs publish their retained lists and the respective strengths and weaknesses of squads become a little clearer, here are the latest rumours from around the division ...

Ipswich making moves

Bristol City CEO Mark Ashton is just two weeks away from moving from Ashton Gate to Portman Road and assuming a similar role in Suffolk at ambitious Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys, now under American ownership, are understood to have a £40million budget this summer and are able to pay players Championship-level wages as they look to earn promotion from League One under Paul Cook.

The East Anglia Daily Times report that one of their prime targets is Luton centre-back Sonny Bradley, with the 29-year-old out of contract at Kenilworth Road.

Bradley has interest from the Championship, including Preston, but such is the salary on offer from Ipswich he could be tempted to drop down a division.

Norwich considering Gunn

Championship title winners Norwich City could be in the market for a second-choice goalkeeper and Angus Gunn, son of Canaries legend Bryan, is among their top targets, report Hampshire Live.

Gunn spent the recently-completed season on loan at Stoke City from Southampton but the emergence of Joe Bursik and return to form of Adam Davies shunted him down the pecking order at the Bet365 Stadium.

Considered third-choice at Saints behind Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster, the 25-year-old could be on the move this summer with Norwich wanting a back-up to Tim Krul as Orjan Nyland is yet to sign an extension.

Gunn, who spent a season on loan at Carrow Road in 2017/18, is under contract at St Mary's until 2023 but the expectation is that Southampton will make him available for transfer.

Posh want McGeady

Peterborough are preparing for life back in the Championship by considering a move for arguably the most talented player outside the top divisions in England.

Aiden McGeady is out of contract with Sunderland this summer and Posh boss Darren Ferguson wants to bring him to London Road on a free transfer, according to the Sun on Sunday.

Sunderland are preparing for their play-off semi-final against Lincoln, in which the 35-year-old playmaker is likely to play an influential role, but he could be in the Championship irrespective of how Lee Johnson's Black Cats perform.

McGeady is one of the best-paid players in League One and the chances of Sunderland retaining him in League One, should they even wish to, seems unlikely.
