IPL set to continue despite India’s worsening Covid crisis

The Indian Premier League appears set to continue, despite the worsening Covid-19 situation in the country, after the teams were assured by tournament organisers that the biosecure bubble was safe.

Three Australian players, as well as Ravichandran Ashwin, withdrew from the tournament on Monday as the pandemic raged across India.

There are 11 English players still at the tournament and the ECB — who will be keen to keep a positive relationship with Indian authorities ahead of men's and women's tour this summer and the launch of The Hundred — will leave it up to the players to decide whether they return.

While there is some anxiety among the players, they are happy to be guided by the authorities.

In county news, James Anderson will wait another week before turning out for Lancashire as he overcomes a “tight calf” that ruled him out of their game against Kent this week. Rather than facing Sussex at Hove, Anderson will line up for the first time this season against Glamorgan on May 6.

Mark Wood, however, is set to make his first appearance of the season for Durham on Thursday, at home to Warwickshire.
