IPL on TV: Sky Sports lose UK rights as cricket fans turn to Hotstar streaming service

Cricket fans will not be able to watch the Indian Premier League on Sky Sports after the channel confirmed it will not broadcast its matches.

The company had penned a multi-year agreement which gave the channel rights to show the tournament, which boasts players such as England star Ben Stokes.

However, customers were reportedly informed that the competition would not be on Sky Sports this year - just 12 months after signing the agreement.

In a statement, Sky said: "it has been confirmed that Star India will exploit the rights themselves this year so Sky will not be covering the IPL cricket in 2019."

According to The Cricketer, at least one broadcaster has been looking into the possibility of a deal and it has been suggested Star Sports have opted to retain the rights for their exclusive use in the UK.

As it stands, the company's online streaming service, Hotstar, would be the only way UK viewers can watch live IPL action.

That would require fans of the Indian's elite cricket competition to shell out £11.99 a month for a subscription.

The 2019 season for the tournament, which was won last year by the Chennai Super Kings, is set to begin on March 23.
