IPL 2022: Sunrisers Hyderabad survive Tim David onslaught to beat Mumbai Indians by 3 runs

MUMBAI: Have Mumbai Indians found a successor to the big-hitting Kieron Pollard? The West Indian has starred, for the five-time IPL champions with some stunning jailbreaks. However, this season it has not quite gone right for the Trinidadian, leading him to be left out of the playing XI for the last few games.

But MI have invested heavily in Tim David, paying the Singapore-born Australian Rs 8.25 crore at the auctions. After an indifferent start, leading him to be dropped, the burly all-rounder won a couple of games for the franchise with his big hitting.

He looked to be doing the same at a throbbing Wankhede on a balmy Tuesday as MI needed an improbable 45 runs off 18 balls to hunt down Sunrisers Hyderabad’s 193/6.

David hit T Natarajan for four sixes to get the equation down to 19 off 13 balls. Then, in a moment of madness, he ran for a non-existent single and was dismissed run out for 46 (18 balls, 3x4, 4x6), leaving the tailenders to score 19 off 12.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a maiden in the 19th over, leaving David to cover his face with his MI jersey in the dug out in despair. Ramandeep Singh scored 15 off the last over, including a last-ball six off Fazal Farooqui, to leave MI three short and reflecting on another close defeat.

Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan had earlier given the chase the perfect impetus with a 95-run opening stand. But Umran Malik’s pace, including a ping to Rohit’s helmet and his wickets of Kishan, Daniel Sams and Tilak Verma, derailed their chances.

SRH got to 193/6 because of a profligate display in the field and with the ball by MI, but that should not mask the quality of Rahul Tripathi’s knock of 76 (44b, 9x4, 3x6) and the energetic knocks of 42 (26b, 4x4, 2x6) from opener Priyam Garg and Nicholas Pooran (38; 22b, 2x4, 3x6).

Tripathi figured out that SRH had the unenviable record of hitting the least boundaries in the Powerplay this IPL. Today, they course-corrected and hit nine. Even Bumrah wasn’t spared.
