IPL 2020 | We are a bit muddled right now, says Fleming

After its second straight defeat on Friday, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming felt the team was a bit muddled and needed to do some soul-searching.

“We are a bit muddled right now, trying to find a balance that allows us to be competitive,” said Fleming.

Commenting on the team’s issues while chasing, he said: “Without Rayudu and Raina in our batting line-up, we are trying to find the right combination. Our performance today was on the weak side in terms of our intent, but Delhi bowled very well.

“We are trying to give players opportunities early on so that we know what we have as the tournament goes on.

“We have got time to review what we are doing and rectify our issues, which are quite a few.”

The former New Zealand skipper also felt that the team’s spinners have not done a good job so far.

Area of concern

“The style of play CSK has developed over the last 12 years has been heavily based on spin.

“What we are trying to do is find a different personality as a side, but spin still plays a part. We are struggling to adjust and find the right pace to bowl through the middle overs.

“So spin has gone from being a strength to an area of concern,” said the 47-year-old, who has guided the team to three titles.

“There is a lot of soul-searching that needs to be done from coaching as well as strategy point of view.”
