IPL 2020 | Destiny still in our hands: McCullum

Kolkata Knight Riders’ Nitish Rana being cleaned up by Mohammed Siraj during the IPL 2020 match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Abu Dhabi on October 21, 2020.

Kolkata Knight Riders coach Brendon McCullum said his batsmen were “timid” in their approach and “lacked intent,” which led to the team’s humiliating eight-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League at Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

KKR top order failed miserably as the side managed 84 for eight following RCB seamer Mohammed Siraj’s early three-wicket burst.

“I didn't think there was a lot in the pitch. Siraj bowled well and (Chris) Morris at times. But we were just a little timid in our approach,” McCullum said at the post-match press conference.

“That’s frustrating…Before the match we talked about wanting to show some strong intent with our batting…tonight we probably lacked that intent.

“Siraj bowled excellent lines and lengths. He was out to present the seam and ask a few questions of us, questions which were answered better than we did tonight.”

The New Zealander, who was known for his dominating batting, said, “There are many things you can do. You can use your crease laterally, advance or go deeper into your crease. You can try and apply a little bit of pressure somehow.”

McCullum cited the example of RCB opener Aaron Finch – who showed intent during his knock of 16 off 21 balls – and expected his batsmen, who “learnt good lessons,” to be creative.

McCullum said the team must keep its morale high. “We are still fourth which is very fortunate for us. Destiny is still in our hands and we’ve got to tidy up some of the areas.”
