A new feature rolled out with the iPhone 14 is reportedly being activated by rollercoaster rides and calling police. Apple has installed a feature on its latest phones which automatically calls emergency services if you are in an accident.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the phones have been calling emergency services after users took their new phones onto rollercoasters. The feature is also included in the latest Apple Watch Series 8, Ultra and SE. The newspaper has seen the records of six calls to emergency services from iPhones whose crash detection system was triggered by rides at Kings Island amusement park in Cincinnati, Ohio.
An automated message from an iPhone can be heard saying: "The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone". The amusement park can be heard in the background.
Drivers have also reported the system activating if they drop their phones while their vehicle is moving.
Rollercoaster news site Coaster101 said Dollywood theme park is warning visitors of the risk of false alerts with signs at entrances to two of the park's most intense rides. The signs say not to take newer Apple devices on board.
Apple say the system is designed to detect severe car crashes using motion sensors, sound, changes in air pressure and GPS, reports the BBC.
After a crash users are given a 20 second warning and if they don't dismiss the alert the phone will call emergency services to report the location of the incident. It also sends a message to a user's emergency contacts.
The feature can be deactivated, and Apple says it will improve with time.
The BBC approached Apple for comment.
