iPhone users will be able to text a car key to their friends in iOS 14, Apple announces

Wallet, phone, keys - the standard mental checklist that most people do when they leave the house in the morning.

But your car key could soon be omitted from that list, thanks to Apple’s upcoming iOS 14 update.

Apple has announced that it’s launching digital car keys, allowing users to unlock their cars using their iPhone.

What’s more, the digital car key can be sent to your friends, allowing them to also unlock your vehicle.

Apple said: “Digital car keys give users a secure way to use iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock and start their car.

“Digital car keys can be easily shared using Messages, or disabled through iCloud if a device is lost, and are available starting this year through NFC.

"Apple also unveiled the next generation of digital car keys based on Ultra Wideband technology for spatial awareness delivered through the U1 chip, which will allow users to unlock future car models without removing their iPhone from their pocket or bag, and will become available next year.”

Several users have taken to Twitter to discuss the update.

One user said: “Sharing your digital car key over iMessage just seems like the weirdest feature that makes a lot of sense.”

Another added: “Digital Car Keys is a revolutionary idea. No more car key, opening & starting your car through the NFC on your iPhone.”

Siri shortcut lets iPhone users record interactions with police if they are pulled over

And one joked: “I would use my iPhone as a digital car key, but can't imagine it working on a 2013 Mazda.”

The update is part of Apple’s iOS 14, which will come to iPhones soon.

Other key updates include a new home screen layout, resizable widgets, and a new App Clip feature.
