After months of anticipation, Apple finally unveiled the iPhone 12 this week.
The tech giant announced four new smartphones at its Hi Speed event on Tuesday - the iPhone 12 Mini, the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
While many fans are eager to get their hands on the new iPhones, others have claimed that Apple has slowed down their old iPhones following the launch.
One user tweeted: “The way Apple make older models slow down via updates and force you to upgrade hurts.”
Another added: “Hey @Apple, releasing The iPhone 12 Pro doesn’t mean you now have to slow down all previous phones. Love, A Concerned Apple User.”
And one joked: “Soon as Apple wanna mess around and present us the iPhone 12, my phone wanna slow down. BRUH. Stop doing that Apple. Y’all killing me.”
Thankfully, there’s a simple explanation for the slowing down of old iPhones.
As part of the iPhone 12 launch, Apple has rolled out a new iOS update.
This means that many of the systems that make up your iPhone will get changed, putting a heavy demand on your processor.
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, a researcher at ZDNet, explained: “Installing a new OS on an iPhone triggers a lot of stuff to go on in the background, from indexing to recalibrating the battery, and this can go on for hours or even days.
“Not only does this consume power, but the battery recalibration can give the impression that the battery is draining more rapidly when in fact it isn't.
“Add to this the dual factor of a lot of app updates happening following a new release, combined with a lot of new features available that may put more drain on an older handset.”
If you’re worried about your iPhone battery, and it’s been a few days since you updated, Mr Kingsley-Hughes advises checking your battery health.
He explained: “If you go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and the message is that it is good for Peak Performance Capability, then it's either just the normal stuff going on, or a bug.”
