If you have an iPhone, it’s likely you’ve experienced the annoyance of running out of storage space.
But the days of frantically deleting photos to make space could be a thing of the past, thanks to a handy iPhone trick.
The trick involves iCloud, Apple’s cloud storage service that lets you backup photos, videos and more to the cloud.
While iCloud is automatically synced with your iPhone, this means that deleting a photo will also wipe it from iCloud by default.
Apple explained: “iCloud Photos keeps every photo and video you take in iCloud automatically, so you can access your library from any device, whenever you like. Any changes you make to your collection on one device change on your other devices too.”
Thankfully, there’s a handy way to decouple the two, to ensure photos remain on your iCloud even if you delete them from your iPhone.
Simply go to Settings and tap your name at the top of the screen.
Tap on iCloud, Photos and then tap the ‘iCloud Photos’ and ‘My Photo Stream’ toggle so they’re no longer green.
This will let you delete photos from your iPhone without removing them from iCloud!
However, it’s important to note that if you reconnect your iPhone to iCloud, the deletions will carry through to the cloud.
Another good option to optimise space on your iPhone is using the Optimise Storage solution.
Apple explained: “iCloud Photos keeps all your photos and videos in their original, high-resolution version. You can save space on your device when you turn on Optimise Storage.”
To turn this on, simply go to Settings > Your name > iCloud > Photos > Optimise device Storage.
