iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max ditch titanium for aluminium once more, but take everything else to the next level

Apple iPhone 17 event 2025.
Quick Summary

Apple has announced the Pro iPhone models for 2025 and, as expected, they come with a major design change. For starters, they swap back to aluminium from titanium.

That helps thermal management, yet also keeps the new builds light and premium.

Apple's iPhone Pro models have always shot straight to the top of the best iPhones list each year, but the latest refresh is different In a good way.

For starters, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max ditch the titanium casing found on previous models. Instead, we get a unibody design with an aluminium build, covered in Apple's Ceramic Shield glass tech.

That includes the front Super Retina XDR displays – 6.3-inch on the Pro, 6.9-inch on the Pro Max.

There's an added extra on each too, in the form of a much-larger camera module than we've seen before. And a new vapour chamber has been included inside to ensure the phones remain cool during gaming and other processing hungry tasks.

Speaking of which, like the iPhone 17 Air, the new iPhone 17 Pro models run on the new A19 Pro chipset, while storage starts at 256GB. And you can now go up to a mammoth 2TB on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

But perhaps the most impressive new feature is a bigger battery in each – with eSIM only models gaining extra power for longer video playback and other use. They feature up to 39 hours of playback time, it's claimed.

56% larger camera sensor

As part of the chunkier camera units on the rear of the new Pro models, there's a much larger telephoto sensor. It is capable of 4x zoom optically, but also 8x when using Apple's new Fusion camera technology (utilising the other sensors too).

Digital zoom goes up to 48x now, while the front camera has been boosted up to 18-megapixels. It supports Center Stage for photography too – allowing multiple faces to be detected and the frame to resize as appropriate.

All three cameras on the rear are 48-megapixel and you can shoot video in up to 4K 120fps and with Dolby Vision. The new iPhones now support ProRes RAW and Genlock, too

Pre-orders and on sale date

The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models will be available in Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue, with matching TechWoven cases.

Pre-orders start this Friday (12 September) and they'll each be available seven days later, from 19 September. Pricing starts at $1,099 / £1,099 / AU$1,999 for the Pro, and $1,199 / £1,199 / AU$2,149 for the Pro Max.
