iPhone 11 Pro 'can override location settings', security researcher claims

It’s been one of the most popular smartphones of 2019, but a new claim suggests that the iPhone 11 Pro may not be as secure as many owners think.

Security researcher Brian Krebs claims that the iPhone 11 Pro ‘can override location settings’ and tracks users even when they’ve set it not to.

Mr Krebs claims that while disabling all location services appears to work, users are vulnerable if they choose individual controls.

On his blog , he explained: "One of the more curious behaviours of Apple's new iPhone 11 Pro is that it intermittently seeks the user's location information even when all applications and system services on the phone are individually set to never request this data.”

Based on his findings, Mr Krebs contacted Apple, sharing a video which showed the location services icon on, even after this feature had been disabled.

Mr Krebs also noted that the issue couldn’t be replicated on an iPhone 8, indicating that there’s something hardware-related with the iPhone 11 Pro.

However, Apple claims that there aren’t any security implications with the findings.

An Apple engineer replied: “We do not see any actual security implications.

”It is expected behaviour that the Location Services icon appears in the status bar when Location Services is enabled.

“The icon appears for system services that do not have a switch in Settings.”

Mirror Online has contacted Apple for comment.
