Iowa vs. Southern: Meaningless halfcourt buzzer-beater leads to gut-wrenching bad beat

Behind a 41-point performance from national player of the year candidate Luka Garza, the No. 5 Iowa Hawkeyes cruised to a 103-76 win over Southern on Friday to improve to 2-0 on the season. For bettors who put money on Iowa to cover the spread, though, the ending of the game were equal parts heartbreaking and enraging.

The Hawkeyes entered the game as a 28-point favorite, and appeared poised to win by 30 as they ran the clock out on the game. Southern got the ball back with just a few seconds left to play – but Brendon Brooks heaved a halfcourt shot at the buzzer and banked it in trim the margin to 27 points. The 2020 college basketball season is only a few days old, but there may not be a worse beat the rest of the year.
