Iowa (0-0) vs. Miami University (0-0) Game Preview
Iowa doesn’t leave the state throughout September an just once before October 26th, but it needs a few scrimmages.
Rutgers is up next in the Big Ten opener, but then it gets fun with a trip across the state to deal with Iowa State. First, it has to deal with a decent-looking Miami University team with just enough talent to make a push in the MAC East race.
The RedHawks have to deal with three road games in the first four dates – including a trip to Ohio State – but coming up with their first win over Iowa in four tries isn’t a crazy thought. Again, they’re going to be good.
Why Miami University Will Win
There’s just enough there to bring an offense that could give the rebuilding Hawkeye D problems. The receiving corps is terrific, the top backs are there, and three starters return to a line with a whole lot of promise and talent.
The Iowa defense has to replace seven starters with just enough key parts gone to be an early concern. This will grow into a dangerous group as the season goes on, but if the Iowa offense sputters a bit out of the gate against a RedHawk defense that gets back seven starters and will have one of the MAC’s best secondaries, this will be a fight.
Why Iowa Will Win
Miami won’t have the firepower if Iowa can get out to a good early start.
This is a good MU attack, but it’s not going to show a whole lot of explosion. It’s going to need to control the clock and drives, and it’ll have to hold up on the lines. Iowa might be retooling a wee bit, but don’t expect a whole lot of issues in pass protection or at getting into the backfield.
Expect Iowa to hold the ball for at least 33 minutes, it’ll convert third downs on the MU D, and …
What’s Going To Happen
After a shaky first half, Iowa will pull away with a few explosive drives to let everyone take a deep breath. This is a better MU team than the one Iowa whacked 45-21 in the 2016 opener, an it’s going to be sound enough to keep this from getting out of hand … for a while.
