Iowa (2-0) vs. Iowa State (1-0) Game Preview
Why Iowa Will Win
Will the Iowa State team that showed up for Northern Iowa come out of the tunnel for the Cy-Hawk Trophy?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, all the battles between Iowa teams are fired-up emotional fights, but UNI is an FCS team that took the Big 12er to three overtimes.
So far, the Iowa defense has been a rock. It stalled Miami University, destroyed Rutgers, and now it’s going against an Iowa State passing game that should be better as the season goes on, but stalled way too often against the Panthers.
Meanwhile, Nate Stanley has been terrific right out of the gate. Justin Fields might be doing big things for Ohio State, but Stanley is right up there with the Big Ten’s best quarterbacks, coming off a strong 236-yard, three-score day against the Scarlet Knights. Iowa State has a solid secondary, but it needs help from the pass rush that’s going to struggle against the Iowa line. However …
Why Iowa State Will Win
Where’s the Iowa pass rush?
The defensive front has been great okay against the run, but it’s not doing much of anything to get into the backfield. It hasn’t mattered much so far in the two wins, with with two sacks and four tackles for loss in the first two games, the pressure isn’t there so far.
With Deshaunte Jones coming off a 14-catch game, LaMichael Pettway catching two touchdown passes, and a decent running back by committee approach in the opener, the offense has more than it showed.
Iowa State might have struggled to get by UNI, but it turned into a good warm-up before getting two weeks off to get ready for this. It was a Week 1 game, and it’s Iowa State – it’s not going to be Oklahoma rolling up anyone, but the team knows how to control games.

What’s Going To Happen
Six of the last eight of these have been relatively close fights, and this will be another one.
Don’t expect a scoring explosion, being more like last year’s 13-3 Iowa win than the 44-41 firefight in 2017. It’ll be a fight-straight Iowa win as slow-and-steady wins the race.
Iowa State will hang around, hang around, hang around … and it won’t be able to come through late when it has its chances. Stanley will be just sharp enough on third downs in the fourth quarter to lead two scoring drives to breathe a little easier, but it’s going to be an intense four quarter fight.
