Iowa State (2-1) vs. Baylor (3-0) Game Preview
Why Iowa State Will Win
Now there’s the offense that didn’t show up over the first two games.
Iowa State isn’t going to hang up 72 points on everyone, and rolling against ULM isn’t all that big a deal, but it’s nice to see that it’s possible.
Brock Purdy was almost perfect, the running game ripped off yards in chunks, and the attack was great from start to finish without taking its foot off the gas, and now there’s some pop to go along with the defense.
The offensive line has been strong throughout the first part of the season, and it’ll have to hold up against a Baylor defense that’s been terrific so far … against Stephen F. Austin, UTSA and Rice. The Bear D hasn’t faced anyone so far.
Even against the mediocre competition, Baylor hasn’t been able to force a slew of takeaways. Considering turnovers have been a problem so far for the Cyclones, there won’t be too many reasons to worry this week.
Why Baylor Will Win
The Baylor offense might have sputtered against Rice last week, but it’s been fantastic on third downs so far and it’s been a quick-strike attack with a great tempo.
Yeah, Iowa State’s offense blew up on ULM, but it did nothing against Iowa State and was held in check by Northern Iowa. It’s been able to come up with yards, but it’s not great at putting the biscuit in the basket.
No, the Bears haven’t dealt with any high-powered passing games so far, but this is an improved group of defensive backs on a defense that should be far stronger than last season’s version.
The Bears have yet to allow a touchdown pass and hasn’t given up more than 200 yards through the air. Iowa State will likely end both of that, but the air show won’t go off.

What’s Going To Happen
The last two games between the two have been low-scoring fights, and it will be again. Both teams will do great jobs of doing what they do – Baylor will be solid at keeping the chains moving, and Iowa State will get a big day from its offensive line – but it’ll come down to the kicking game.
Iowa State’s Connor Assalley has hit 7-of-8 field goals so far and all of his extra points. Baylor’s John Mayers has missed his only field goal attempt. This will come down to a big kick.
