iOS 13 update will bring one of the iPhone 11's best features to iPhone XS and XR

If you're still on the fence about whether to splash out on a new iPhone 11, you might be interested to know that one of its best features will also be available on the iPhone XS and XR.

At its iPhone 11 launch event last week, Apple showed off a new version of the FiLMiC Pro app running on the iPhone 11 Pro.

The demo excited a lot of fans because, with iOS 13, FiLMiC Pro is able to record from multiple cameras simultaneously.

So you can record from the front and back camera together, for example, or film from the new ultra-wide and standard wide cameras simultaneously, to capture different shots.

This feature will not be available on every iPhone running iOS 13, because the it requires a significant amount of hardware and processing power to pull off, 9to5Mac reports.

However, it will be available on the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and the new iPad Pro models, as well as the iPhone 11 lineup.

BBC trainer Marc Blank-Settle showed off the feature last week, using an iPhone XR and the beta version of iOS 13, claiming it could be a game-changer for mobile journalism, vlogging and even film making:

Filmic Pro isn't the only app capable of recording from multiple cameras simultaneously.

Apple announced the multi-cam API back in June, giving developers the whole summer to work on incorporating the feature into their camera apps.

However, these apps require a lot of processing power so, depending on the iPhone model you're using, there may be some imposed limitations.

For iPhone XS and iPhone XR, only certain combinations of cameras can be active simultaneously. Developers may also have to use lower-quality video feeds from the cameras, instead of full 4K.

Apple hasn't made it clear how many simultaneous video streams can be captured using the new iPhone 11 models.

Given the limitations imposed on the XR and XS, the iPhone 11 should be able to record at least three streams simultaneously at full resolution, to help Pro users justify the upgrade, according to 9to5Mac.

In the Filmic demo, the preview screen appeared to show live feeds from all four of the iPhone 11 Pro's cameras at the same time.

iOS 13 will be available as a free download from September 19. Filmic Pro can be downloaded from Apple's App Store for £14.99.
