iOS 13: Release date and new features of Apple's next software update for iPhone

Apple is preparing to release the latest version of its iOS operating system, iOS 13, after tomorrow's iPhone 11 launch event.

iOS 13 will bring a range of new features, not just for people who buy the new iPhones, but for anyone who updates their existing iPhone with the new software.

First and foremost, iOS 13 will bring the long-awaited Dark Mode - a new dark colour scheme that works across the entire operating system and all native apps.

This is designed to extend iPhone battery life, and make prolonged use easier on the eyes.

Dark Mode is available to third-party app developers for integration into their own apps, and can be scheduled to turn on automatically at sunset or at a certain time, according to Apple.

iOS 13 will also bring a wide range of new features for Apple apps, such as Maps, Photos and Messages.

For example, a new feature called "Look Around" In Apple Maps offers a Google Street View-like experience, allowing users to navigate cities using 360-degree street-level imagery.

The Photos app features new , allowing users to virtually adjust the position and intensity of the lighting.

For example, you can move the light closer to sharpen eyes and brighten and smooth facial features, or decrease the intensity of the light for more a subtle, refined look.

There's also a new Portrait Lighting effect called High-Key Mono, which creates a classic look with a monochromatic subject on a white background.

Meanwhile, the Messages app now lets you use a "Memoji" as your avatar, allowing users to create animated avatars with customised hairstyles, headwear, makeup, piercings and accessories.

Any Memoji you create automatically become sticker packs that live in your keyboard, so you can use them in Messages, Mail and third‑party apps.

With iOS 13, Apple is also introducing a new way to sign into apps and websites, called "Sign In with Apple".

Instead of using a social media account or filling out forms, verifying email addresses or choosing passwords, customers can simply use their Apple ID.

Apple says it will protect users' privacy by providing developers with a unique random ID.

Even in cases where developers choose to ask for a name and email address, users have the option to keep their email address private and share a unique random email address instead.

iOS 13 release date

Apple has said the new software features will be available in the autumn as a free software update for iPhone 6s and later.

The company is holding an event on September 10, to unveil its iPhone 11, with the new devices expected to go on sale on September 20.

New iOS updates usually come a couple of days before the release of a new iPhone, so iOS 13 will probably be released on September 17 or 18.
