iOS 13 is released tomorrow - here's how to check that your iPhone is ready

If your iPhone is in need of a refresh but you can't afford to splash out on a new handset, you'll be pleased to know there's a new update on the way - and it's totally free.

, the latest operating system update from Apple, is due to be released tomorrow, and it will bring a range of new features to your iPhone.

These include Dark Mode, Apple Arcade, Sign in with Apple, a Google Street View-like Maps experience called Look Around, and a range of new photo and video editing tools.

It will almost be like having a brand new iPhone - without the giant iPhone-shaped hole in your bank account.

If you're planning to download iOS 13 tomorrow, it's a good idea to make sure your iPhone is ready. Here's what you need to do.

When will iOS 13 be released?

Apple announced at its iPhone launch event last week that iOS 13 will be available from September 19.

The company never reveals an exact launch time but, if previous years are anything to go by, the update should go live at around 6pm BST.

It's worth noting that it can take longer to download the update on launch day as millions of fans attempt to install it on their devices at the same time.

If you are happy to wait, it's often worth attempting the download the following day, as install times can be much faster.

Is your iPhone compatible

It's worth noting that iOS 13 isn't compatible with all iPhone models, so if you own an older device, such as an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, you'll have to stick with your current operating system.

Here's a full list of compatible products:

  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Plus
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE

How to get your iPhone ready

Before you update to iOS 13, you should make sure your iPhone is fully charged or you are near a plug.

It's also worth checking you have some free storage available on your device, as this is often needed before an installation can take place.

An iOS update typically takes up anywhere between 1.5 GB and 2 GB of storage space. Plus, you need about the same amount of temporary space to complete the installation.

That means you'll need about 4 GB of available storage to install the update.

Finally, Apple always advises backing up your iPhone or iPad before installing any new updates.

You can either backup to the iCloud or plug your iPhone into your computer to make sure any important data is stored and saved.

How to update your iPhone

Once Apple has officially released the update, you should get an alert on your iPhone.

You can also check for the update by opening the Settings app and tapping General > Software Update.

If iOS 13 is available on your device, you should then see an option to update.

This can take a while, so make sure you don't need to use your phone for anything important before hitting the download button.
