Thomas Bach, president of the IOC, has called on organisations to protect clean athletes and renew worldwide trust in sport.
The International Olympic Committee executive board discussed issues of ethics on the opening day of its three-day meeting in Lausanne on Tuesday, where preparations for Rio 2016 are high on the agenda.
Last month Bach said he expected Russia to comply with doping regulations before next summer’s Games, despite their athletes currently being banned from international competition by the IAAF following a report detailing endemic doping in the country.
Bach wrote: “Clean athletes who push themselves day in day out pursuing their dreams see the finger of suspicion pointing at them. This is the very worst ‘side-effect’ of doping. We must do everything we can to protect these millions of clean athletes around the world. For their sake and for the credibility of sports competition, they have to be protected from doping and corrupting influences.”
