IOA elections: Nov 20 last date to receive names for electoral college; final list of contesting candidates to be displayed on Dec 4

NEW DELHI: The returning officer (RO) tasked with carrying out the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) electoral process in a free and fair manner on Wednesday came up with the official notification to hold elections to the executive council (EC) of the national Olympic committee (NOC) on December 10 here.

According to the notification issued by retired IAS Umesh Sinha, who had served as the secretary general of the Election Commission of India (ECI), November 20 has been fixed as the last date to receive names for electoral college from the affiliated member units eligible to cast their votes.

The process for submission of nomination papers by the interested individuals eyeing the key office-bearer posts in the IOA's EC will begin on November 25 and will last till November 27 up to 5pm. The nomination papers will have to be submitted in person.

The scrutiny of nomination papers as received by the RO will be done on November 29 and preparation and display of list of validly nominated candidates will be carried out the next day. The withdrawal of candidature can be done from December 1 to 3 between 11 am and 4 pm.

The list of final contesting candidates will be displayed on December 4 and the eight (4 male and 4 female) Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit (SOM) will be formally inducted into the IOA's General Assembly with voting rights on the day of the elections on December 10.

The voting will be carried out on December 10 between 11 am and 1:25 pm before the counting of votes will be taken up the same day between 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm. The results will be declared at 3 pm by the RO.

As per the amended constitution, the national sports federations (NSFs) whose sport is included in the programme of the Olympic/Asian/Commonwealth Games will be entitled to have two representatives each with one vote each for each representative. "However, the NSFs must ensure to put forth the names of one male and one female representative in order to avail their two votes.
