"Investing in the rule of law for a better future"

The Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), in collaboration with the Institute for Global Law and Policy (IGLP) at Harvard Law School, has announced an upcoming workshop on the rule of law and policy, which aims to provide a platform for scholars and emerging leaders from around the globe to engage with and learn from like-minded peers in the public and private sectors on cross-cutting legal and policy issues. The TIJ-IGLP Workshop for Emerging Leaders on the Rule of Law and Policy seeks to provide them with crucial analytical and practical skills through the exchange of innovative ideas and alternative approaches to understand the rule of law in all its complexities for the realization of sustained and equitable growth.

TIJ was established in 2011 with the primary objective of promoting excellence in research and capacity-building in the criminal justice system. It is the first Thai organization to become a member of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program Network Institutes (UN-PNI) whose mission is to promote the rule of law and equal access to justice to achieve a peaceful society with partnership from all sectors, which is in accordance with Goals 16 and 17 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

TIJ has joined forces with the Harvard Law School to develop the Rule of Law and Development (RoLD) Program by adopting a broad-based approach for the rule of law education. The Program is comprised of two intensive workshops uniquely designed for two selected target groups -- emerging leaders and academics--those who are passionate and eager in fueling the movement to promote the rule of law and sustainable development agenda at the national, regional, and international levels.

The TIJ - IGLP Workshop for Emerging Leaders on the Rule of Law and Policy, is one of the collaborative efforts. It is an intensive one-week course exclusively taught by renowned professors and specialists from leading academic institutes from around the globe, including Harvard Law School, New York University, London School of Economics, University of Melbourne, and many more. The Workshop seeks to equip participants with a nuanced understanding of the dynamic linkages between the rule of law, policy-making processes and development discourses. It aims to provide future leaders with an unparalleled opportunity to engage and network with their peers from Asia and the rest of the world.

This year’s Workshop will focus on how innovation, technology and law could become driving forces behind sustainable development. Participants will have opportunities to engage with and receive mentorship from world-renowned faculty members from the IGLP network in designing novel policy solutions and tools to address pressing regional issues such as cybercrime, access to justice, financial inclusion, women’s empowerment and corruption in the Problem Labs.

Participation will be limited to only 65 outstanding emerging leaders selected from the public and private sectors, as well as non-governmental and civil society organizations.

The TIJ-IGLP Workshop for Emerging Leaders on the Rule of Law and Policy will be held on 6 to 11 January 2019, at the Arnoma Hotel, Bangkok. Apply now, until 3 November 2018.

The TIJ and Harvard truly hope that participants will share invaluable knowledge on the rule of law and development gained at the workshops with those in their respective fields, and inspire the future generation of leaders to engender a culture of lawfulness in their societies.

Prof. Dr. Kittipong Kittayarak, the Executive Director of TIJ has stressed that the workshops not only aim to enhance personnel development in crime prevention, criminal justice and the rule of law, but also align with the TIJ’s core mission to create an inclusive society, whereby everyone acknowledges the importance of the rule of law and its fundamental role in fully achieving other aspects of sustainable development.
