Investigation underway after police van destroyed by fire in Stockport

An investigation is underway after a police riot van was destroyed in a fire Stockport.

The vehicle - believed to belong to GMP's Tactical Aid Unit - was found on fire on Truro Avenue in Brinnington on Thursday night.

It is not clear whether officers had been attending an incident at the time.

Police shared a photo of the burnt-out van on social media, urging anyone with information to get in touch.

A statement from GMP Stockport read: "Police are appealing for members of the public to come forward with information after a police vehicle was found on fire in Brinnington, Stockport.

"Shortly before 11.30pm on Thursday, May 30, 2019, we received reports of a police vehicle on fire on Truro Avenue.

"Officers are currently following lines of enquiry but do you have any information, which could aid the investigation?

"Did you see anyone around at the time of the incident? If so, please get in touch at the earliest opportunity."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 2444 of May 30.

Alternatively, information can be passed on anonymously by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
