Investigation underway after Dumbarton Central bus incident

An investigation is underway after a bus lost its roof after colliding with a Dumbarton railway bridge.

The First Bus vehicle, which was out of service at the time, collided with the bridge on Townend Road just before 7am on Saturday morning - leaving the busy route blocked and strewn with debris.

A local resident told the Lennox: “The buses are supposed to turn left before the bridge and go along Bankend Road so they bypass the bridge.

“It’s so obvious it wouldn’t fit, I don’t know why anyone would even try.”

And First revealed that an investigation was set to take place into the collison.

Duncan Cameron, operations director for First Glasgow, said: “We can confirm an out of service bus was involved in an incident on Townsend Road, Dumbarton on Sunday. There were no reported injuries from anybody on-board at the time or members of the public. Emergency services attended the scene.

“The safety and well-being of our passengers, drivers and the public are our number one priority and we are conducting a full investigation to determine how this incident happened.”

Police Scotland meanwhile confirmed that a man had been reported for road traffic offences relating to the incident.

The busy route under the Townend Road bridge was closed last year as Network Rail carried out a £1.3m project to refurbish bridges at Dumbarton Central station.

A source at the time described the bridge as "a costly nightmare" with engineers discovering that the structure was in a far poorer condition than they had initially expected.

Work was finally completed last summer, with a spokesperson for Network Rail saying: "The work we undertaken is vital to the long-term operation of the railway."
