Investigation underway after deliberate bin fire causes gas explosion

Detectives have launched an investigation into a gas explosion in a Renfrewshire street.

Emergency crews raced to Maxwell Drive in Erskine around 4am this morning after firebugs torched bins close to a pipline.

The road was sealed off as fire crews and engineers made the area safe.

And now a probe is underway in a bid to catch the mindless yobs who started the fire.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We are investigating a wilful fire raising incident which happened around 4am in Maxwell Drive, Erskine.

"If you have any information or witnessed what happened, please come forward to police."

It is understood there were no injuries reported.

Councillor Michelle Campbell, who represents the Erskine and Inchinnan ward also appealed for anyone with information to come forward, said: "Following up on enquiry regarding Maxwell Drive, it has been confirmed this matter was a result of a bin fire impacting on a gas pipe.

"The incident was attended by relevant emergency services. There were no injuries.

"This serious incident is being investigated by Police Scotland.

"It is unacceptable for anyone to be put at such risk in the community. Thank you to the prompt response by our emergency services.

"If you have any information which can assist Police Scotland in this incident, please call 101 or call Crimestoppers free and anonymously on 0800 555 111."
