Investigation under way into fire which gutted Sunderland shop after breaking out in storage yard

An investigation has been launched after a fire broke out and gutted a Sunderland shop on Bonfire Night.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Ryhope just before 8pm on Thursday after reports of a blaze at the Happy Shopper store.

After crews arrived, it was discovered that the fire had begun at a nearby storage yard and moved towards the shop.

The fire was found to have initially started from a wooden carport and caravan before the flames spread.

The fire service had initially believed that there may have been casualties involved but soon discovered nobody was inside.

Crews from Farringdon, Rainton Bridge, Washington and South Shields attended including command support from Sunderland Central.

Up to 20 firefighters were involved at one point and the fire was extinguished by hose reels, jets and positive pressure ventilation fans.

Firefighters left the scene shortly before 9pm.

Photos taken on Friday show the devastation left in the wake of the fire and black scorch marks on the building.

An investigation is now under way to determine the cause of the fire.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly before 8.30pm yesterday (Thursday) we were alerted by the fire service to a fire at a shop on Ryhope Street South, Sunderland.

“Emergency services attended the scene and found a fire had broken out at a nearby storage yard which had spread to the rear of the store. Thankfully nobody was injured.

“Inquiries are ongoing with the fire service to determine the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire.
