A probe has been launched after a Royal Navy serviceman was found dead at nuclear submarine base in Scotland.

Emergency services rushed to Naval Base Clyde following reports of an incident at around 12.30pm on Thursday.

Police Scotland are investigating the “unexplained” death at the high-security Faslane naval base.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.

“A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

A Royal Navy spokesman added: “We are aware of the incident and cannot comment further at this stage.

Naval Base Clyde, on the west coast of Scotland, is one of three operating Royal Navy bases in the United Kingdom.

It houses Britain’s fleet of four Vanguard class submarines equipped with Trident nuclear missiles and five other Astute and Trafalgar class nuclear-powered attack submarines.
