Investigation under way after group of men tried to 'rob' ticket machine at Fawdon Metro station

A man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to 'rob' a Metro ticket machine.

Police were called at around 2am on Wednesday with reports that a group of men were acting suspiciously at Fawdon Metro Station.

However, when officers arrived, those involved allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle.

A 31-year-old man has since been arrested and remains in police custody and witnesses are being asked to come forward with information.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly after 2am today (Wednesday), police received a report of a group of males acting suspiciously at Fawdon Metro Station, in Newcastle.

“It was reported that the individuals were trying to rob the cash machine, but upon police arrival, they got into a vehicle and fled the scene.

“An investigation is ongoing and police have arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of attempted theft. He remains in custody and is assisting officers with their enquiries.
