Investigation under way after flames rip through roof of Ashington home

Investigations are taking place at a Northumberland home where a fire ripped through the roof.

One person was taken to hospital with burns after a blaze broke out at Rowlington Terrace, Ashington on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said fire investigators will be working throughout Thursday to determine the cause of the fire.

Four fire crews were dispatched to the street at 5pm and three pumps were used to douse the flames.

The blaze was brought under control by 6.30pm, but firefighters and investigators remained on the scene into the evening.

Neighbours gathered in the street with one onlooker suggesting flames stretched 20ft into the sky.

Michael Watson, 69, said: "It was my neighbour who come along and told me the house was on fire.

"The flames were 20ft at least. There was a lot of people out in the street.

"This is the quietest area in the world, a lovely place to live.

"I have been here 35 years and I've never seen anything like this.

"Without doubt, this could have been a lot worse."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed a patient had been taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington to be treated for burn injuries.
