Investigation reveals how many drunk passengers have been arrested at Bristol Airport

An investigation has revealed how many drunk passengers have been arrested at Bristol Airport over the last two years.

More than 400 airline passengers across the country were arrested on suspicion of being drunk during this time period, police data has shown.

A passenger arrested after sexually assaulting female crew and one found urinating in a walkway en route to a plane were two examples of intoxicated travellers from Bristol.

The figures show at least 245 people were arrested on suspicion of being drunk at a British airport between April 1 2017 and March 31 2019.

A further 204 arrests were made relating to alleged drunkenness on planes.

A total of 19 people were arrested for such drunken behaviour at Bristol Airport during those years.

Passengers convicted of being drunk on an aircraft face a maximum fine of £5,000 or up to two years' imprisonment.

Tim Alderslade, chief executive of trade body Airlines UK, described the arrest figures as "ridiculous" and demanded the introduction of new laws to reduce the number of drunk passengers.

He said: "There is no credible reason we've heard - other than commercial gain - why airport bars and duty free are not licensed in the same way as any pub or restaurant on the high street."

The police data, obtained through Freedom of Information requests, reveals there have been the following number of arrests at each UK airport between April 1 2017 and 31 March 2019:

  • Heathrow: 103
  • Gatwick: 81
  • Glasgow: 47
  • Liverpool: 40
  • Birmingham: 39
  • Stansted: 37
  • Luton: 26
  • Edinburgh: 22
  • Bristol: 19
  • Newcastle: 12
  • Leeds
  • Bradford: 12
  • Southampton: 3
  • Aberdeen: 3
  • Cardiff: 2
  • London City: 2
  • Exeter: 1
