Investigation ongoing after man found collapsed in Newcastle city centre near Central Station

An investigation into the collapse of a man in Newcastle city centre is ongoing.

A major police cordon was erected around St Mary's Cathedral opposite Newcastle Central Station at around 7.30pm on Friday.

Police officers and paramedics were called to the scene near to the statue of Cardinal Basil Hulme.

North East Ambulance Service staff say they were called to reports of a person in cardiac arrest.

One patient was taken to hospital.

Northumbria Police said there was no evidence of an assault but inquiries were ongoing.

On Saturday morning, it was confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing and nobody has been arrested.

Chief Inspector Dave Morrison, of Northumbria Police , said: "We received a report from a member of the public of a collapsed male in the St Mary's Cathedral area.

"Northumbria Police and British Transport Police attended and gave immediate first aid to the collapsed man, who has been taken to hospital for further treatment.

"At the moment there's no indication that he's been assaulted although the cause of his collapse is currently unknown.

"We are currently speaking to witnesses and there is a scene in place which is cordoned off."

The cordon was in place for several hours on Friday evening.
