Investigation launched after woman, 63, dies in house fire in Edwinstowe

A 63-year-old woman died after a fire at her home in a Nottinghamshire village.

Fire crews and police officers were called to an address on Birkland Drive, Edwinstowe, at around 3.30pm on February 5.

Three fire engines attended the incident alongside the police and the East Midlands Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team.

A fire investigation is currently ongoing looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service's prevention area manager, Damien West, said: “I would like to share my most sincere condolences with the family, friends and the local community during this difficult time.

“My thoughts are also with the agencies and personnel who attended the incident and we will be going out into the community over the weekend offering fire safety advice.

“Incidents like these remind us all of the devastating consequences of fire, and our advice to everyone is to make sure you have working smoke alarms and that everyone in your home knows what to do in the event of a fire.”

Inspector Heather Sutton, district commander for Newark and Sherwood, offered reassurance to Edwinstowe residents as the investigation into a woman’s death continues.

Inspector Sutton said: “I understand that hearing about an unexplained death can be concerning for residents.

"We are still working to establish the circumstances around the death and we will need to wait for the results of the post-mortem examination, which can take time.

"I would like to reassure people that at this time, I have no concerns about the safety of people Edwinstowe.”
