Investigation launched after 'unexplained' death of woman in North Shields flat

An investigation is under way after a woman was found dead in a flat in North Shields.

Emergency services were called to the property in Trinity Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning after the woman was discovered unresponsive.

Police and paramedics attended but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service confirmed that they received a call just after 2am and dispatched a rapid response paramedic to the scene.

Officers remain in the area outside of the flat on Wednesday afternoon.

Northumbria Police is currently treating the death as "unexplained" but an investigation is taking place.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At about 2.30am today police received a report from the ambulance service that a woman was unresponsive at an address on Trinity Street in North Shields.

"Officers attended but the woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries into the circumstances around her death are ongoing but it is currently being treated as unexplained.

"Anyone with information who wants to contact police can do so by reporting online at the Northumbria Police website quoting log 93 06/05/20.

"If you don’t have access to the internet you can call 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
