Investigation launched after stolen digger used to remove ATM from filling station in Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh

An investigation has been launched after a stolen digger was used to rip an ATM out of a wall in Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh.

The incident happened in the early hours of this morning.

Thieves used the digger to remove the ATM from a filling station on the Dromore Road just after 4am this morning.

The PSNI said the digger had been stolen from a nearby construction site, RTE reports.

It's understood the ATM was loaded onto a trailer and the digger was set on fire after the robbery.

The thieves are understood to have loaded the cash machine onto a trailer before setting the digger alight and fleeing. The incident happened at Dromore Road around 04:05 GMT on Sunday. (Pacemaker Belfast)

As of now, it is not known how much money the stolen ATM contained.

PSNI officers are investigating whether the latest theft has any links to a recent series of ATM robberies in border counties.

They have appealed for anyone who may have been in the area between 3.30am and 4.10am on Sunday morning to contact them if they saw any suspicious activity.
