Investigation launched after 'serious assault' on the Newcastle Quayside

An investigation has been launched following a "serious assault" on the Newcastle Quayside.

Emergency services were called to the scene in the early hours of Saturday morning and paramedics treated a man with "serious" head injuries.

The victim was then taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

A cordon was put in place near to the Millennium Bridge and officers with evidence bags could be seen carrying out searches.

Scores of discarded beer bottles were pictured near to the scene outside of Pitcher and Piano.

A separate cordon was also put in place nearby on City Road.

Northumbria Police is now appealing for witnesses.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Shortly before 3am today (Saturday) we received a report of an assault just off the Millennium Bridge on the Newcastle side.

"Emergency services attended and the victim was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries and has since been discharged from hospital.

"Enquiries into the circumstances around the incidents are ongoing but police are now appealing for help from the public.

"Anyone who witnessed the assault is asked to call police on 101 quoting log 107 20/03/21 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

"You can also report it online at www.northumbria.police.uk/contact or email 2529@northumbria.pnn.police.uk quoting log number 107 200321."
