Investigation launched after 'rubbish found dumped' in North Belfast warehouse unit

An investigation has been launched after rubbish was found dumped in a warehouse unit in North Belfast.

Images of the inside of a warehouse unit, said to be at the Edenderry Industrial Estate off the Crumlin Road, have been posted on social media in recent days.

Locals in the area have complained of issues with flies and rodents which they believe are linked to the rubbish.

William Humphrey, a DUP MLA in the area, told Belfast Live he had visited the site on Friday morning. Staff from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency also visited the site.

He added: "This is just not acceptable and presents a major health hazard to local people".

Mr Humphrey said the "sheer scale" of the rubbish "in a densely populated area has created major health and safety issues.

He added: "For a number of weeks local residents have been living with bad smells, a swarm of flies and the district has been plagued with rats. My colleagues and I have been in contact with Belfast City Council and the NIEA. Urgent action is needed to address this situation."

Asked about the situation, a spokesman for the NIEA said: "The Department is aware of this matter and it is currently under investigation, therefore it is inappropriate to comment further."

Belfast City Council added that they had "been made aware of the condition of a unit on Edenderry Industrial Estate and officers have been liaising with the Enforcement Branch of the NIEA and the site management on this matter".
