Investigation launched after Oliver Cromwell statue in Wythenshawe daubed with graffiti AGAIN

Police have launched an investigation after vandals targeted a statue of Oliver Cromwell in Wythenshawe.

Officers were called at around 11.35am on Thursday (17 September) to reports that the monument in Wythenshawe Park had been damaged.

Three people climbed on the statue in the early hours of Thursday morning and covered it in graffiti, GMP said.

Police say the damage will cost thousands of pounds to repair.

The statue has since been covered up with tarpaulin. Greater Manchester Police have not released any details about the nature of the graffiti.

It followed demonstrations in Bristol which saw the controversial statue slave trader, Edward Colston pulled down and thrown into a river.

Mass protests broke out across the world following the death of George Floyd, who was killed in police custody in the US.

In response to the Black Lives Matter protests, Manchester City Council promised a review of every statue in the city.

The Grade II listed bronze statue of Cromwell, which is mounted on a granite plinth and pedestal, is dated 1875.

It was originally located on Deansgate.

Police are yet to make any arrests in connection with the latest graffiti incident, but are appealing for information.

Inspector Ian Thomson, of GMP's City of Manchester district, said: "Repairing this damage will cost thousands of pounds. This behaviour is not acceptable and enquiries are ongoing to identify the people responsible so we can ensure they face justice.

"We know that three people were involved in this incident. We believe they were on foot and entered the park from Wythenshawe Road.

"I appeal to anyone with information which may assist with our investigation to contact us or Crimestoppers."

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 4882 quoting crime number 1164 of 17/09/20 or the independent charity - Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
